It’s no secret that we all love to have choices when we’re not in the comfort of our home. But after years of trying to fit every “what-if” situation outfits in my suitcase, I have some tips to being one step closer to only brining a carry-on to your next destination.
Pack for 1 Week
The first thing I have to remind myself is no matter how long my stay is, whether it’s one week, two weeks, or four months, to simplify my packing to one week’s worth. I know, how can you possibly go 4 months and only have one week’s worth of clothes? But I’m here to tell you that it can be done. Trust me, coming from someone who went to Vancouver for four months with a carry-on. You’ll have to accept for trips longer than a week, you will have to do laundry.
The 2 x 2 Rule
The 2 x 2 Rule. Limit yourself to 2 pairs of shoes and 2 pairs of pants (including the ones you’re wearing). Wear your chunkier pair of shoes, and pack your lighter ones. This goes with your bottoms as well, wear your chunkier pair and pack your lighter one. If the pants you’re wearing aren’t comfortable enough to wear to the airport, ditch them at home.
Wear Your Bulk
Wear your bulk. If weather fluctuates where you’re going, pack your lighter items and wear your bulkier items. This way you can save more room in your suitcase.
Pack your basics. This doesn’t mean you have to pack your neutral colour t-shirts, but pack items that you know serves more than one purpose. That cardigan you’re wearing can just be tied around your waist when it’s warm, and back on you when it’s cold. That t-shirt you’re wearing when it’s warm out can also act as a base layer for when it’s cold out.
When I’m going to warm places, you’ll never see me without packing a dress. What’s better than slipping into one item that serves as a top and bottom?
Just Roll With It
Literally roll your clothes! Simple right? You’ll be surprised with how much room you save when you roll instead of fold.
Cut the Cosmetics
When it comes to make up, I’m definitely not the girl that is brave enough to face the world without minimal make up on my face. I can’t live without my liquid eye liners! But fortunately, cutting down on cosmetics is easier than I thought. Have you heard of Ipsy? Sam and I are obsessed with it! For those of you who don’t know, it’s basically a monthly make up subscription service that sends you a cute little bag with cosmetic samples. I like to pack what I typically need for everyday make up wear but in these Ipsy sample sizes. And for any of those bigger bottles that you need to pack with you, just put them in smaller containers! This way, you can minimize your travel make up.
Do you have any tips for packing light?
